Chakra meditation has been around for thousands of years. It is based off of the fact that there are seven different energy-bearing chakras within the body. The goal of this practice is to maintain physical and mental wellbeing by keeping these chakras balanced.
Chakra meditation believes that if your key chakras are balanced properly, your health and mental attitude will be in a more peaceful state. When one chakra is unbalanced or closed off—you will naturally put more energy into the other functional chakras—which can actually overload some chakras and cause them to become blocked as well, or make others more active than needed.
Either way, it can have a serious impact on your overall balance and peace of mind. Chakra meditation can work to open up these blocked chakras for you.

Solar Plexus Chakra
Also Known As: Manipura
This chakra is located in your stomach, above your naval. It governs your digestive process. However, it should not be confused with the root chakra—just because you are experiencing digestive challenges, it doesn’t mean your yellow chakra is blocked.
This is because the solar plexus chakra also has a serious role in your mental and spiritual state. If you are struggling to understand and embrace the experiences you have and find spiritual meaning in them—that is a sign that your yellow chakra is off.
People who have a strong solar plexus chakra naturally embrace and appreciate what life throws at them and the experiences they are able to have.

The green chakra, or the heart chakra is located right in the middle of our cardiovascular system. This is why it should come as no surprise that it governs a lot of the organs and systems around it.
If you have respiratory issues or high blood pressure—you may have an imbalanced heart chakra. People who have an open heart chakra, on the other hand, are better able to form emotional connections with those around them.

The next chakra, known as the throat chakra is located near the thyroid glands. This chakra is responsible for governing self-expression and communication.

Third Eye Chakra

Right above the throat chakra is the third eye chakra. It is located right in between where your eyebrows meet.
This is the energy source that governs your insight and intuition. This is true both of your physical ability to see what is around you—and your spiritual insight and intuition as well.
People who have a very open and balanced third eye chakra not only have a good understanding of the world, but they understand how it is connected and what their place in the world is. People who struggle with these concepts and understanding their “role” in society—may have an imbalanced third eye

The final chakra is possibly the most recognized of all of the chakras, and it doesn’t actually sit inside the body. This form of every, sits on the top of your head.
When all six of the chakras below the crown chakra are balanced and you have a normal, healthy energy, the crown chakra can do what it does best—connect you with the world around you.
People who have a balanced crowned chakra are not only very confident, but tend to be at peace with and secure with their lives.
Practicing Chakra Meditation
How do you practice chakra meditation? Practice involves breathing exercises with a single chakra or for advanced learners all 7.
Chakra meditation is the key to opening up blocked chakras and making sure that all seven of these energies are working together in the body.
However, you need to figure out which of these chakras is blocked, closed off or imbalanced first, before you can focus on it during your meditative practice.
There are several chakra tests online that you can use in order to test and find out which chakra is blocked. However, if you look at each of the detailed descriptions of the seven chakras, you will likely be able to figure out which chakra you are having issues with.
For beginners, it is best to start with a guided chakra meditation. However, you can try it on your own as well.
When you meditate in chakra meditation, you are going to use a mantra. As you will notice, each of the aforementioned chakra comes with its own mantra. Depending on the chakra you are looking to balance, you will use the coordinating mantra during your practice.
Beginning Your Mantra with Chakra Meditation
- Sit comfortably on the floor or on a cushion. You will need to give yourself at least 30 minutes for chakra meditation.
- Make sure you have your mantra in your mind and take one big inhale in, and exhale out.
- Start breathing deeply and evenly. Let your hands fall limp and keep your spine straight and strong, but don’t put any stress on it.
- Keep breathing in and out, evenly and normally.
- Start by going through all seven chakras—they each need their own attention in order to bring balance. Focus on each color for about a minute until you actually see that color energy passing through your body (this is where a guided meditation can come in handy).
- Once you have addressed all of your chakras, you should feel a positive energy flowing through you as you imagine balanced chakras.
- Pay attention to your blocked chakra, and the mantra that will help you unlock it. Continue to breathe evenly and deeply, repeating the mantra until your session is over.
Depending on how blocked your chakra is and on how much time you have to dedicate to that chakra, you may not find balance right away. Regular meditation will help.
While some people prefer to start with all chakras then go to their blocked chakras—there are a few different schools of thought on this. Some people looking to release blocked chakras, only focus on their blocked energy sources. Others who have balance and want to maintain balance, simply focus on all seven of their chakras during their session—giving them each their own time.
